A word from the coordinator

Dear festival friends,

I would like to share my experience from last year’s SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER festival with you.

I took part in one of the morning discussions. The students (participants and spectators), Czech and also foreign pedagogues and other theatre experts met every morning, having a good breakfast and evaluating what they had seen the day before. Each participant emanated a vitality which you can hardly ever see anywhere. The students described the inspiration they got from their colleagues from all corners of the world through the theatre. Personally I did not have high expectations for these discussions. Tell me - who would want to hold a discussion at 9 a.m. after dancing all night? Actually, the opposite was true. If we didn’t have to dedicate ourselves to other performances, we would still be sitting there today. At that moment, I realised how extraordinary our project was and how lucky I was to have an opportunity to be a part of it thanks to JAMU. Those morning discussions fulfilled the role of the festival – mutual inspiration through creative principles, traditions and the theatre itself across the world.

SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER festival is about to celebrate its 25^th birthday. It has gone through quite a few changes since its origin. But the thing that hasn’t changed is that students of various ateliers at the Theatre faculty of the Janacek Academy of Arts in Brno prepare the festival for you. Those students, who intensively dedicate themselves to the festival through three years of studying for a bachelor’s degree in theatre management or stage technology, manage the festival independently during their 3^rd year of school. The 25^th anniversary of the festival is the evidence of a job well done and also the driving force of the preparations for this year´s festival.

 It will be an honour for our organizational team to prepare a program full of interesting productions and lots of experiences for you.
