About the school
The theatre education at HKB has been renowned for being an innovative school for young actors since its foundation. In 2007 the program was adapted to the demands the ever changing theatre world is making on young actors today. It is a challenge to become an actor or actress. Theatre studies at HKB provide the necessary time and space to meet that challenge: to discover the medium of theatre as well as oneself as an actor/actress, to learn the craft of acting, to find one’ s own theatrical language. HKB provides artists with a context to question and develop their own performance work. Theatre beyond the conventions of theatre. The HKB offers the framework: work spaces, workshops with renowned guest lecturers and individual tuition by mentors. HKB supports: in networking with artists and theoreticians, institutions, and other art disciplines. Students will be enabled to independently work on performance projects – as performer or as author, alone or in a team, in your own discipline or across disciplines.
YES! (maybe)
„To be or not to be“ –
I know exactly what I want to do, if only there wouldn’t be the others.
Well, then I’d rather stay quiet.
YES! (Maybe) is based on the topic of “Honest Decisions” and takes up the production process of a theatre performance.
Human life is made up of decisions. On the way to a decision, we put oneself under constant pressure, which also fuels our own insecurity. It becomes even more complex when other people are involved. Tensions rise between our needs and those of our fellows, which causes a dilemma: Do I follow my opinion and stay true to myself or do I pay attention to the wishes of the other person? We are caught up in our own claims and strive for our integrity. But our integrity is constantly crumbling. We get thrown back on questions about how and why we make certain decisions or we may simply lie to ourselves in the end.
Such questions and dynamics also exist in the artistic creative process. Whether as a soloist or in a team, decisions have to be made. But do the decisions primarily serve the content of the work of art? Vanity and the urge to reach a crowd with one’s art are part of the system in which art is generated and cannot be separated from it. There are tons of different reasons why the artist’s ego could become more important than the message of their art. Sometimes for purely rational reasons, sometimes subconsciously.
The way to a performance is a minefield of crises with oneself or with others.
„It is 2020 after Christ and we are still living in the Middle Ages. We are still living with the body that has many more colours inside than outside. We are still living with the fairytale of love and not a single day without blood. “ – Jan Fabre
